2014 candidate for City of Holdfast Bay.
Heritage survey responses.
What do you think Council's role is in protecting and conserving heritage?
Council and its DAP in considering the use of a property and/or any proposed development, should be mindful of the State Heritage Act 1993 (particularly site criteria), the State Heritage Register and the provisiosn of the State Development Act 1993 in ensuring places of significance are recognised and given worth as part of the decision making process.
What measures and incentives do you support to protect and conserve local heritage?
As a non-incumbent candidate, I have been unable to determine the City of Holdfast Bay's present strategy for dealing with Heritage assets. I would looking to provide my support to that policy and identify any perceived gaps for review.
What is the most important heritage protection issue in your local government area?
The built heritage of the Council region as well as places of cultural significance such as the Tjibruke Springs and the Old Gum Tree.
What policies and programs will you advocate to protect and conserve heritage in your local area?
I will support the Council's existing policies and programs.
Do you support local Councils retaining development approval powers for projects over $3m in value?
Yes. I believe that the State Government stripping of councils powers is a retrograde step.
Do you have any other thoughts about the protection of heritage in your Council area?
As a resident of Holdfast Bay for 40+ years I have grown up through the various architectural styles, good and bad, from the 60's to the present day. Sadly the 1970's saw vast changes in Glenelg and Glenelg East with the ubiquitous cream brick home-unit blocks and flats which saw many beautiful bungalows and villas demolished. My father was among those instrumental in saving Partridge House as the beautiful house, park and function centre it is today. The first decade of this century has seen a similar occurrence with "tuscan style" urban infill developments. I recognise that each generation, past, present and future have their own ideas of heritage and cultural significance and that we must accept change. I will however, if elected, seek where possible to provide balance in planning and heritage discussions and strive to ensure our places and precincts of significance are given protection where appropriate.
